Katherine Calvey

Flutist, Katherine Calvey was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She began her studies there with various members of the Cleveland Orchestra, (William Hebert, former piccolo; Jeffrey Khaner, former principal; Martha Aarons, second flute) while playing in The Inaugural Season of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Jahja Ling, and The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music Preparatory Orchestra. She went on to study flute with flutists of prominent orchestras such as Boston, Chicago, Detroit, London, New York, and Philadelphia. She has also received Master Classes with renowned flutists such as Julius Baker, Robert Willoughby and James Galway.

At sixteen years old, Katherine was the winner of the First Annual Littmann Music Competition in New York. The following year she won The Cleveland Rotary Club Music Competition. Other competitions won include The Agnes Fowler Wind Competition of The Ohio Federation of Music Clubs; The Tuesday Music Club Competition of Akron, Ohio; and The Mid-Atlantic Flute Competition in Washington D.C.

Ms. Calvey received her Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from The Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore where she studied with Mark Sparks, (then a member of The Baltimore Symphony and current principal for the St. Louis Symphony). She received her Master of Music degree from The University of Michigan where she studied as a full scholarship student of Leone Buyse (former principal of The Boston Symphony and current professor at Rice University).

Ms. Calvey's orchestral career has taken her to important concert venues such as Carnegie Hall with The National Youth Guild Orchestra and to Europe with The American Wind Symphony. She has also performed as a member of The Battle Creek Symphony, MI; The Cleveland Choral Arts Society Orchestra; The Comic Opera Guild of Ann Arbor, MI; The Mansfield Symphony, OH; The Ohio Light Opera; The Traverse City Symphony, MI; and The Warren Symphony, MI.

She traveled to Colombia to perform as a soloist and the principal flutist in Barranquilla and Cali. She has performed solo concerts in Curacao, Ecuador, Italy, Manizales, Mexico, Peru and El Salvador. In Mexico, Ms. Calvey was the principal flutist in The Acapulco Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also performed in The Monterrey Symphony Orchestra in Mexico. In 2005, Ms. Calvey performed piccolo and flute as a member of the prestigious Mineria Symphony Orchestra in Mexico City. Her current position is principal flutist for Camerata de Coahuila in Torreon, Mexico. Previously, she was principal flutist in The State Philharmonic of Chihuahua, Mexico where she also performs yearly as a concerto soloist.

As a flute professor, Katherine has enjoyed a wonderful studio of students. She currently is the flute professor at The Conservatory of Music in Chihuahua. Her students have won several competitions and orchestral positions. Ms. Calvey was the flute professor at The University of Cauca in Colombia previously. She taught classes at Flute World in Michigan as well as at the Preparatory Department at The University of Michigan and The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music. She has given master classes in Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Europe, Peru, and the United States.

Ms. Calvey has recorded three compact discs, “Flute Fantasia”; “Silent Night”, with flute and guitar; and most recently, “Canyon Echo”, for solo Flute, which was recorded live in Namurachi Canyon, Mexico. She also can be heard playing piccolo on the CD, “The Call Mexico”.
